Returning Horses from Europe Must be PCR-Tested for Equine Herpes Virus-1

An outbreak of Equine Herpes Virus-1 (EHV-1) among showjumping horses at the Spring Tour event in  Valencia, Spain, has caused many equine fatalities and severe clinical cases, forcing the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) to cancel events across Europe.

The strain is of particular concern due to its neurological effects on the animal. But there is a vaccine for EHV, and several European countries have received shipments recently from US suppliers.

However, national bodies strongly advise owners to abide by strict biosafety measures as the virus can be contained by isolation and testing.

The EHV-1dtec-qPCR test kit from Genetic PCR Solutions (Spain) comprises a series of species-specific targeted reagents designed to detect the EHV-1 species by using qPCR.

EHV-1 is a DNA virus, with the DNA genome enclosed by an icosahedral capsid surrounded by a tegument layer and an outer membrane, also known as the virion envelope.

EHV-1 belongs to the family Herpesviridae that causes abortion, respiratory disease, and occasionally neonatal mortality in horses. Together with EHV-4, they are known to produce equine rhinopneumonitis. The ability to target multiple organs makes EHV-1 the most costly virus to the equine industry.
